Project Objectives

A proper and complete SMA design project consists of the following objectives.  These are set to ensure such modern asphalt concrete is designed, transported, laid, compacted and documented properly to guarantee durability and reliable serviceability of the pavement.

    • Project Proposal

    • Specific technical conditions for a SMA project

    • Techno-economic assessment of the project reported to the client and consultancy group

    • Design, production and laying

    • Design methods, sieve analysis, and feasibility study of bitumen modification

    • Design steps (in flowcharts) and optimization

    • Supplying necessary additives and fibres

    • Mix design, sieve analysis outcomes, quality control of aggregate gradation, bitumen content, fibers content and control, mixture stability and strength

    • Plant modifications, asphalt production, dosing, production check lists

    • Transportation requirements, laying and compaction, operation highlights, operation check lists

    • Necessary training including possible production, laying and compaction problems and appropriate solutions

    • Mandatory surveillance reports to the authorities

    • Necessary points and reminders to the contractors

    • Quality control

    • Quality control tests

    • Sampling methods

    • Reporting mandatory test results to the client/authorities

    • Mandatory documentations for the contractors

    • Monitoring and pavement performance surveying

    • Pavement maintenance and management during design life span
